The ADAM screening questionnaire (Androgen Deficiency in the Ageing Male) is a short, validated symptom checklist used around the world to help identify men who may have low testosterone (testosterone deficiency).
The ADAM (Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male) questionnaire is a simple, validated tool that helps men identify symptoms that may be linked to low testosterone. By answering a few short questions, you can get a clearer picture of whether your symptoms may warrant further investigation.
For in-person appointments we may check:
• Weight and BMI
• Blood pressure and pulse
• Body hair distribution and testicular examination, where appropriate
Where clinically indicated we will arrange targeted blood tests, which may include:
• Total and free testosterone
• SHBG, LH and FSH
• Prolactin and oestradiol
• Full blood count, kidney and liver function
• Lipid profile and HbA1c (long-term blood sugar)
These are usually taken in the morning, when testosterone levels are highest.
Once we have your results, we’ll review them in the context of your symptoms and examination. Options may include:
• Lifestyle changes such as sleep, stress, weight management, and exercise
• Treating other underlying conditions
• Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) if you meet clinical criteria and it’s safe and appropriate
• Ongoing monitoring and review
We’ll explain everything in clear, straightforward language so you can decide what feels right for you.
Don’t ignore the symptoms of low testosterone. Our home test kit is the first step to getting answers and taking back control of your health. Order online today and start your TRT journey with Men’s Medical Clinic Leeds.
A positive ADAM questionnaire suggests that you have symptoms that are commonly associated with testosterone deficiency, but it does not confirm low testosterone on its own.
At Men’s Medical Clinic, if your ADAM score is positive we will:
Only by combining symptoms + examination + blood tests can we safely diagnose testosterone deficiency and decide whether testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) or another approach is appropriate.
You should consider speaking to a men’s health doctor if:
• You recognise several of the ADAM symptoms in yourself
• You’re struggling with low energy, low libido, erectile issues or low mood
• You’ve already had testosterone checked and are confused by the results
• You’re thinking about TRT and want an evidence-based, guideline-driven assessment first
If you develop severe or sudden symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, severe headaches, confusion or sudden weakness, please contact NHS 111 or attend A&E immediately, rather than waiting for a private appointment.
If you're unsure, have symptoms you're worried about, or want to ask about specific treatment options, you can book a free 15-minute call directly with Dr Areeb Mazhar. No pressure, no obligation — just clear answers from a doctor who specialises in men's health.
The ADAM screening tool is helpful, but not perfect:
• Many of its questions are non-specific – tiredness, low mood or poor concentration can have lots of causes.
• Some men with a positive ADAM score will have normal testosterone levels.
• A few men with true low testosterone may not score positive, especially if they are used to feeling “below par” and under-report their symptoms.
• It does not replace blood tests, a physical examination or a doctor’s judgement.
This is why we always treat the ADAM questionnaire as a starting conversation, not a stand-alone test.
